To become a lawyer, a person must be fully trained in the law of the country in which they reside. Often referred to as an attorney or an advocate, they can fulfill a number of roles depending on the circumstances. When defending or prosecuting a person in court a lawyer will be called an advocate and this doesn't matter if the case is civil or criminal. They can all appear in court but many choose not to while others spend most of their time in the courtroom. Situations occur that require information on a matter of law and in these circumstances they are referred to as legal advisors. This can just be to provide clarification surround a legal matter.

Representation in a courtroom is carried out by trial lawyers. It requires a more confident type of personality, someone who is quick thinking. Trial lawyers are extremely competent individuals who are just as proficient outside the courtroom. They conduct research, interviewing clients and witnesses plus handling other details in preparation for trial.

The law in all its guises affects every aspect of modern society. It affects everyone's life from negotiating a house purchase to organizing a will and the reason why lawyers are governed by a very strict code of practice. Depending on what area of specialization they work in will decide whether they practice in a courtroom, although they are all able to represent their clients in this manner when required.

It is not all glamour though as much of the work involves resolving land disputes, planning licenses and land administration, although they may also be called upon to challenge or defend other civil actions.

Attorneys are also involved with laws protecting intellectual property rights, an area much in the news of late, property like digital media, CD's, computer games and software for instance, are particularly at risk since the advent of the Internet. Legal departments within insurance companies also employ specialist lawyers. Their purpose is to protect the company's interests against fraudulent claims and advise on the legal terms and conditions used in policies.

The vast majority of attorneys work within the private sector where they can devote their energies to either criminal or civil law. Criminal lawyers defend or prosecute persons charged with a crime. Civil law uses their talents to argue in a civil court over claims, mortgages and other types of litigation.

Where there are high profile cases that may affect the public, or be in their interest, other legal specialists operate. This can be where a large company or government body may be involved with actions that have affected the general public. A few lawyers decide to use their knowledge to help the defense and rights of those less fortunate in foreign countries. This aspect of legal assistance is often frowned upon but it is a dignified use of a person's legal skills.
